Orthodoxy & the Old Testament
This course is for anyone seeking to gain a deeper knowledge of the Old Testament. Over the course of four sessions, we will discuss a series of questions. Why don’t many Orthodox Christians read the Old Testament!? What is the place and purpose of the Old Testament in Holy Tradition? How does the Old Testament shape Orthodox worship? What is its relationship to history? How does it guide our lives today? Join us as we explore the Law, Prophets, and Writings and seek to understand, as the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Lk 24.44), their ultimate fulfillment in Christ.
Dr Michael Legaspi is Associate Professor of Old Testament at St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible, Harvard University). He taught previously at Creighton University, Penn State University, and Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. He is the author of The Death of Scripture and the Rise of Biblical Studies (Oxford University Press, 2010) and Wisdom in Classical and Biblical Tradition (Oxford University Press, 2018). He and his wife Abby have four grown children: Josiah, Sister Glykeria, Ana, and Cato. They have been part of ROCOR and OCA parishes, as well as churches in the Greek and Antiochian Archdioceses.
Course Information
Each course is four weeks long and will take place via Zoom every Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. (EDT). Each of the four sessions is 1 hour and 15 minutes (including Q&A). These courses include optional readings and a Google form “exit ticket” that will be given out at the end of each class session to gather feedback on the session.
